Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has once again made a giant leap forward with an increase of 200 places in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THEWUR) 2019. UUM is now placed at the 801-1000 position in the rankings compared to the 1001+ grouping in THEWUR 2018.

The latest list, which was released yesterday, has also placed UUM at the fifth place among the Malaysian Public University (UA) group and the seventh among Malaysian universities.

The Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dr. Ahmad Bashawir Abdul Ghani expressed his delight with the university’s substantial increase in THEWUR 2019.

"This is certainly an impressive achievement, attributable to the hard work and commitment of the whole campus community and their dedication to further bring UUM to the world stage. This accomplishment also proves that UUM can be at par with other Research Universities (RU) considering that UPM and UNITEN also share the same position as UUM.

"I wish this momentum will be maintained so that the university position will continue to increase and we will continue our efforts to Humanise Education,” added the Vice-Chancellor.

THEWUR adopts 13 performance indicators which are grouped into five (5) categories in assessing a university. The categories are:  Teaching: the learning environment (worth 30 percent of the overall ranking score); Research: volume, income and reputation (worth 30 percent); Citations: research influence (worth 30 percent); International outlook: staff, students and research (worth 7.5 percent); Industry income: (knowledge transfer) (worth 2.5 percent).

As with the previous edition, UUM received the highest score for the International outlook category and is listed in the 453th position. Three indicators included in this category are:  the number of international students, international staff members and international collaboration (joint publication with international writers).

In this edition, a total of 1,258 institutions worldwide were listed including UUM and the full results of THE World University Rankings can be accessed at https://www.timeshighereducation.com.
